Drawings

Drawing is the foundation of all the different aspects of van Ansem’s work, whether it involves his books, sculptures, typography, graffiti, or furniture. Drawing and sketching are fundamental, but drawing is also a medium in itself.

In his drawings, he uses colored pencils, paint markers, markers, and gouache as materials. This wide range of materials is employed to create drawings that display a delicate refinement. The color gradients, the contrast between soft and hard or sharp in terms of color intensity, all contribute to the work. The use of grit as a base form transforms the non-figurative drawings into a visual delight.
